The Great Flood of 1955
In August 1955, Hurricanes Connie and Diane dumped over 26 inches of rain on Washington. Debris blocked the culverts under Litchfield Turnpike in Woodville causing the road to give way, sending a 30 foot wave down the Shepaug River into Washington Depot. Its redevelopment, funded by the Shepaug River Urban Renewal Project, transformed the Depot.
